Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about colonial baseboard

Baseboard height should be proportional to ceiling height. For 8' ceilings, 3-1/4" to 5-1/4" baseboards work well. Higher ceilings can accommodate taller baseboards up to 7-1/4" or more.
Shoe molding (quarter round) covers gaps between baseboard and flooring, especially with hardwood or laminate floors. It's not always necessary but provides a finished appearance.
Inside corners typically use coped joints for the best fit. Outside corners use mitered joints at 45 degrees. Coping creates tighter joints that won't open with seasonal movement.
Coordinating baseboard and casing creates visual continuity. They don't have to match exactly, but should complement each other in style and proportion.
