MDF molding offers consistent grain-free surfaces perfect for painting, while solid wood can be stained to show natural grain. MDF is more dimensionally stable but solid wood offers traditional authenticity.

Consider your home's architectural style, room proportions, and existing trim. Traditional homes suit classic profiles, while contemporary spaces work better with simpler, cleaner lines.

Essential tools include a miter saw, coping saw, nail gun or hammer, measuring tools, and safety equipment. A pneumatic brad nailer makes installation much easier and faster.

Sand lightly, apply wood conditioner (for softwoods), then stain or paint as desired. Prime before painting for best coverage and durability. Fill nail holes after installation.
