About This Tool

Wood Stain Calculator - Quantity Estimator for Wood Finishing

Stain coverage varies more than most people expect - the same quart can cover very different areas depending on wood species, porosity, and how many coats you apply. This calculator estimates how much stain you need based on surface area, wood type, stain type, and coat count.

How to Use the Wood Stain Calculator

  1. Surface Area: Total area to be stained, in square feet
  2. Wood Type: Oak, pine, maple, or cherry
  3. Stain Type: Penetrating oil, gel, or water-based
  4. Number of Coats: 1, 2, or 3

Wood Species and Stain Absorption

Open-grained woods like oak absorb stain readily and show off the grain pattern beautifully, while tight, dense-grained woods like maple and cherry can blotch unevenly and often benefit from a pre-stain wood conditioner. Pine is especially prone to blotching because of its uneven density between early-wood and late-wood grain - a conditioner is strongly recommended there too. Penetrating oil stains soak into open grain and highlight figure best; gel stains sit more on the surface and are the most forgiving on blotch-prone woods; water-based stains dry fast and raise the wood grain slightly, requiring a light sanding pass after the first coat.

Expect roughly 100-150 square feet of coverage per quart depending on porosity - oak and pine drink up more stain than dense maple or cherry. For a real example of how stain reads on open-grain wood, see our look at natural wood and stained oak Shaker cabinets. Once your stain has cured, protect it with a topcoat - see the Polyurethane Calculator to plan that step.
