About This Tool

Backsplash Calculator - Accurate Tile Quantity Estimation

Our backsplash calculator figures out exactly how many tiles you need for a kitchen or bathroom backsplash, accounting for your wall dimensions, tile size, and layout pattern. Getting this number right before you order avoids both a mid-project run to the store and an expensive pile of leftover tile.

How to Use the Backsplash Calculator

  1. Enter Wall Length: Measure the total length of wall you're covering, in feet
  2. Set Backsplash Height: Standard height is 18 inches (the typical gap between countertop and upper cabinets), but enter your actual height if it differs
  3. Choose Tile Size: Select from 2x2, 3x6, 4x4, or 6x6 - the size affects both the piece count and the waste factor
  4. Select Pattern Type: Straight, subway (offset), or herringbone - each has a different cut-waste allowance

Tile Size and Pattern Reference

Standard backsplash height runs 18 inches when installed between a 36-inch counter and 30-inch-deep upper cabinets, though full-height backsplashes (counter to cabinet bottom with no gap) and 4-inch minimum splashes are also common.

  • Straight pattern: Lowest waste, typically 10% overage
  • Subway (offset/running bond): 10-15% overage to account for row offsets at the ends
  • Herringbone: 20-25% overage - the 45-degree cuts at every border tile add up fast

3x6 subway tile remains the most popular choice for Shaker kitchens because its clean rectangular lines echo the cabinet door's recessed panel. For a different visual texture, pair a 4x4 or 6x6 field tile with a decorative border.
