Countertops are priced by the square foot and vary enormously by material, so getting an early estimate matters for budgeting. This calculator figures total surface area from your countertop length and depth, then estimates cost by material type and edge treatment.
How to Use the Countertop Calculator
- Countertop Length: Total linear length of countertop, in feet
- Countertop Width: Standard depth is 25 inches for base cabinets, but adjust for islands or peninsulas
- Material Type: Laminate, granite, quartz, or butcher block
- Edge Treatment: Square, beveled, bullnose, or ogee
Material and Overhang Reference
Standard countertop depth over a 24-inch base cabinet is 25 inches, giving a 1-inch overhang past the door front; bar and island seating typically needs a 12-inch or greater overhang to clear a person's knees. Material choice drives both cost and maintenance: laminate is the most budget-friendly and easiest to install, granite and quartz cost more but resist heat and scratches (quartz is non-porous and needs no sealing), and butcher block brings warmth at a mid-range price but needs regular oiling.
