About This Tool

Pocket Screw Calculator - Sizing and Placement for Pocket-Hole Joinery

Pocket screws are one of the fastest ways to join cabinet face frames and boxes, using an angled pilot hole to drive a self-tapping screw invisibly into the mating piece. This calculator recommends screw length, angle, and spacing based on your material thickness and joint type.

How to Use the Pocket Screw Calculator

  1. Material Thickness: Choose from 1/2" up to 1.5"
  2. Screw Type: Coarse thread, fine thread, or self-tapping
  3. Joint Orientation: Face frame, edge-to-edge, or end-to-face
  4. Pocket Hole Angle: 15 degrees (standard) or 7 degrees (low-profile, for tight spaces)

Screw Selection Reference

The 15-degree angle is the standard jig setting and works for almost all cabinet and furniture joinery; the 7-degree low-angle option is used when the pocket hole would otherwise be too close to an edge or visible surface. Coarse-thread screws grip better in softwood and plywood, while fine-thread screws are the better choice in dense hardwoods where coarse threads can split the material. As a rule of thumb, use a screw roughly 1 inch longer than your material is thick - 3/4" stock typically pairs with a 1-1/4" coarse-thread pocket screw. Space screws every 6-8 inches along a face-frame joint for solid holding power without overdoing it.
